The short answer
Many smartwatches work without an ongoing fee. Others offer subscriptions, premium services or cellular connectivity that can add a recurring cost. Only some of those costs are required.
This guide is based on current manufacturer specifications and published product information, not hands-on testing of every watch. Senior Wearable Guide is owned by the company behind HealthWatch, which sells a featured product.
Three different recurring costs
Sort every fee into one of these groups:
- Product subscription: a recurring payment tied to using the product or a set of core features.
- Optional premium service: extra coaching, analysis, storage or content that can be skipped while basic watch functions continue.
- Cellular carrier plan: service for a compatible cellular watch to connect without its paired phone nearby.
Questions to answer before checkout
Ask what stops working if you never subscribe, whether the watch needs a paid phone line, and whether a free trial automatically converts to a paid plan. Check the product page and checkout rather than relying on an old comparison article.
A watch that uses a nearby phone for calls and notifications normally does not need its own carrier plan. A cellular model designed to work away from the phone generally does.
A disclosed no-product-subscription example
The HealthWatch Series 5 is our company's product. It has no product subscription or monthly app fee. Its calls and notifications use a compatible paired phone nearby rather than a separate watch cellular plan.
Apple GPS models and Garmin's standard watch functions do not inherently require a cellular plan, although optional services can cost extra. Some Google Pixel Watch features require payment, and cellular Apple or Pixel models may add carrier fees. Confirm current terms for the exact model and region.
Frequently asked questions
Does Bluetooth calling require a watch plan?
Not usually. Bluetooth calling uses the compatible paired phone nearby. Independent cellular calling needs a supported cellular model and carrier service.
Is an optional premium service the same as a required fee?
No. An optional service adds features you can choose to skip. A required fee is needed to keep using the product or its core functions.
Can prices and fee terms change?
Yes. Verify current product, subscription and carrier terms at the original seller or manufacturer before buying.
