Check the phone first
A smartwatch can have the right screen and price but still be unusable with the buyer's phone. Confirm the phone model, operating-system version and required companion app before anything else.
This guide is based on current manufacturer specifications and published product information, not hands-on testing of every watch. Senior Wearable Guide is owned by the company behind HealthWatch, which sells a featured product.
The practical compatibility map
Apple Watch SE 3 requires a compatible iPhone and does not support Android. Google Pixel Watch 4 requires a compatible Android phone and does not support iPhone. Garmin Venu 3 supports compatible iPhone and Android phones.
HealthWatch Series 5 also lists iPhone and Android compatibility. The HealthWatch product page does not currently publish exact minimum operating-system versions, so owners of older phones should confirm compatibility with support before buying.
Compatibility means more than pairing once
Check whether calls, message notifications, software updates and the companion app all work with the specific phone. A product may pair over Bluetooth while still limiting certain features by platform or region.
If the watch is a gift, ask for the exact phone model and software version. A screenshot of the phone's About page can prevent a return later.
